Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP)

SHOP funds are to be used to facilitate and encourage innovative homeownership opportunities on a national geographically diverse basis through self-help housing programs that require significant sweat-equity by the homebuyer toward the construction or rehabilitation of the dwelling.

are administered by national and regional nonprofit organizations and consortia.

SHOP funds may be used only for expenses related to land acquisition and infrastructure improvements.

The construction costs of the dwellings are funded with other leveraged public and private funds.

Units developed with SHOP funds must be decent, safe, and sanitary non-luxury dwellings and must be made available to eligible homebuyers at prices below the prevailing market prices.

Additional Information of Eligibility:
Individuals and local nonprofit organizations are not eligible to apply for funding under this competitive SHOP NOFA.

You must be a national or regional nonprofit public or private organization or consortium that has the capacity and experience to provide or facilitate self-help housing homeownership opportunities.

Your organization or consortium must undertake eligible SHOP activities directly and/or provide funding assistance to your local affiliates to carry out SHOP activities.

You must propose in your application to use a significant amount of SHOP funds in at least two states.

Affiliates must be located within the regional organizationÂ’s or consortiumÂ’s service area.
