Established in 1862, the Department of Agriculture serves all Americans through anti-hunger efforts, stewardship of nearly 200 million acres of national forest and rangelands, and through product safety and conservation efforts. The USDA opens markets for American farmers and ranchers and provides food for needy people around the world.
Fiscal Year 2009: Supported the implementation of 318 conservation, restoration or collaborative capacity-building projects on 129 National Forests and Grasslands in all nine Forest Service Regions.
Offered an integrated, nationwide peer learning program to support capacity building and knowledge sharing about collaborative stewardship amongst community-based groups and Forest Service employees. Components include peer learning opportunities, information and referral, direct technical assistance, documentation of best practices and tools, capacity-building workshops and distance trainings.

Uses and Use Restrictions
To aid conservation partnership projects in support of the Forest Service mission, without regard to when the Foundation incurs expenses, for administrative expenses or projects on or benefitting National Forest System lands or related to Forest Service programs: Provided, That the Foundation shall obtain, by the end of the period of Federal financial assistance, private contributions to match on at least one-for-one basis funds made available by the Forest Service: Provided further, That the Foundation may transfer Federal funds to Federal or a non-Federal recipient for a project at the same rate that the recipient has obtained the non-Federal matching funds.
