Rural Water Investment Evaluations (MOZMBIQUE)

The proposed joint MCC-Stanford research study will investigate the extent to which, and the conditions under which, productive uses of domestic water can enhance the financial sustainability of water supply systems, reduce poverty, and advance important social goals such as enhancing gender equality.

The
study will rigorously assess the potential for "enhanced domestic" water supply systems-i.e., systems that provide water for both domestic and productive uses.

Currently, the principal benefits from improved rural water supply are thought to be 1) improved health through the reduction of water borne diseases such as diarrhea; and 2) reduction of opportunity cost through shorter travel times to water sources.

Both are positive benefits but their link to poverty reduction through economic growth and improved system sustainability are ambiguous.

This study will help answer these important questions in the rural water sector to advance progress toward the Millennium Development Goals and improve the quality of life for Mozambique s rural poor.
