The Department of Health and Human Services is the Federal government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially to those who are least able to help themselves.
Fiscal Year 2012: During FY 2012, the PCFSN supported First Lady Michelle Obama"s "Let"s Move" and Joining Forces initiatives in a vareity of capacities with the goal of improving the health of Americans. In addition to supporting these initiatives, the PCFSN launched an enhanced version of the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) called PALA+ (Activity + Nutrition). PALA+ is a recognition program that encourages regular physical activity and healthy eating for all Americans. More than 250 partners from the non-profit and private sectors pledged to support PALA+ through their programs and communications in FY 2012.
The Council worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and leaders in the youth fitness industry to evaluate and inform improvements to the Physical Fitness Test with the goal of creating one national youth fitness assessment program for America"s schools. The Council launched a Physical Activity Outreach initiative that promotes the positive physical and cognitive benefits of regular activity among youth, including improved concentratoin, and time-on-tasks skills. The new Presidential Youth Fitness Program was launched in September 2012. Fiscal Year 2013: In FY 2013, PCFSN convened a subcommittee which included representatives from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), CDC, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to review the evidence on strategies to increase physical activity among youth. The subcommittee, chaired by PCFSN member Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, released its findings through HHS in the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Midcourse Report in March 2013 (www.health.gov/paguidelines). The report serves as a resource for communities to support and create effective interventions for youth to be active at least 60 minutes a day where they live, learn and play.
In FY 2013, the Council also addressed health disparities through its work on the I Can Do It, You Can Do It! (ICDI) program. ICDI previously promoted enhanced physical activity opportunities through a mentoring model to youth with disabilities. However, in FY 2013, the program was expanded to include adults with the goal of launching at least 100 new sites nationwide by 2018. Fiscal Year 2014: In FY 2014, the PCFSN will continue its efforts to facilitate partnerships that encourage the use or enhancement of its programs and existing resources. Information on these initiatives is posted on the PCFSN website (www.fitness.gov) and on the website of the PCFSN President"s Challenge Physical Activity, Fitness, and Nutrition Awards Program (www.presidentschallenge.org).
