The THCGME estimates to grant at least 40 new awards by the start of July 2012. In order to avail of the grants, interested applicants are required to submit electronic applications to the Grants.gov website on or before October 11, 2011.

Entries will be considered eligible when they come from community-based ambulatory patient care centers that operate a primary medical or dental residency program, such as:

a) federally-qualified health centers

b) community mental health centers

c) rural health clinics

d) health centers operated by Indian Health services, such as Indian tribal organizations and urban Indian organizations

In addition, the agency has specifically stated that only primary residency training programs are eligible; such as: a) family medicine b) internal medicine c) pediatrics d) internal medicine-pediatrics e) obstetrics and gynecology f) psychiatry g) general dentistry h) pediatric dentistry; and i) geriatrics.

The listing for the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance emphasizes that the THCGME program is an effective vehicle in increasing the primary care and dental residency training programs in qualified teaching health centers.

The Department of Health and Human Services, the branch of the government that oversees the HRSA, is the principal provider of basic human services in the US, especially to those who are financially challenged and are least capable of helping themselves.

The TCHGME act is essential to the Department of Health and Human Services since it helps them achieve the primary goal of their agency, which is to "Improve the health, safety, and well-being of America."
