The purpose of this grant is to ensure communities are prepared to respond to hazardous materials incidents and that state and local enforcement personnel are adequately training in the Hazardous Materials Regulations.

PHMSA, through this competitive grant opportunity, is requesting applications from nonprofit organizations to (1) conduct national outreach and training programs to assist communities in preparing for and responding to accidents and incidents involving the transportation of hazardous materials, including Class 3 flammable liquids by rail; and (2) to train state and local personnel responsible for enforcing the safe transportation of hazardous materials, including Class 3 flammable liquids.

The FY 2018 Community Safety Grant is open to nonprofit organizations that have the ability to train state and local personnel responsible for enforcing the safe transportation of hazardous materials; or develop best practice guidance on ways to connect with and increase awareness of state and local emergency responders, appropriate Federal, state, local and tribal government organizations, and the general public of hazardous materials being transported through communities.
