Poison Center Support and Enhancement
This announcement solicits applications for the Poison Center Support and Enhancement Grant Program by providing assistance to qualified poison control centers (PCCs) eligible for funds under Section 1273 of the Public Health Service Act, (42 U.S.C.
300d ¿ 73), as amended by the Poison Center Support, Enhancement, and Awareness Act of 2008, to prepare FY 2014 applications for these federal funds. These grants are administered by the Poison Control Program (PCP), Healthcare Systems Bureau (HSB), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The purpose of the five year grant program is to support PCCs efforts to 1) prevent, and provide treatment recommendations for, poisonings; 2) comply with operational requirements needed to sustain accreditation and or achieve accreditation; and/or 3) improve and enhance communications and response capability and capacity.
 Funds may also be used to improve the quality of data uploaded from poison centers to the National Poison Data System (NPDS) in support of national toxicosurveillance activities conducted by the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, improvement of data quality for the purposes of national surveillance is not a requirement of this grant. Projects funded under this program must include an evaluation component; however, a rigorous scientific evaluation is not required.
 Proposed projects/activities must incorporate mechanisms to measure and assess progress in achieving key project milestones directly tied to the project¿s objectives.

Additional Information of Eligibility:
Awards under this grant program are limited to U. S. certified and uncertified poison control centers (PCCs) including those serving the U. S. territories.
Eligible applicants under The Support and Enhancement Grant Program must be certified by a professional organization in the field of poison control that the Secretary has approved as having in effect standards for certification that reasonably provide for the protection of the public health with respect to poisoning.
The only professional organization currently approved is the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC).
Eligible applicants can also be certified by a State government with, at minimum, equivalent standards as the AAPCC.
Uncertified centers are eligible for a grant waiver if such center can reasonably demonstrate that the center will obtain such certification within a reasonable period of time.
The sum of the number of years for a waiver renewal may not exceed 5 years.
