Advanced Nursing Education Program

This announcement solicits applications from eligible applicants for projects to support the enhancement of Advanced Nursing Education and Practice.  It is anticipated that projects will develop and test innovative academic-practice partnership models for clinical training within the graduate nursing

education programs that prepare graduate nursing students to provide safe, quality care within the complex practice-based environment of the nation¿s evolving healthcare system.  Awardees will create one or more innovative partnerships between academic institutions and rural or underserved clinical practice sites to improve the quality of clinical sites and preceptors, improve preceptor training and promote students¿ readiness to practice upon graduation.  Awardees will also use on-going, iterative quality improvement and outcomes evaluation methods to test and improve the effectiveness of the clinical training models.

For the purposes of this announcement, the term ¿advanced education nurses¿ means individuals trained in advanced degree programs including individuals in combined R.N./Master¿s degree programs, post-nursing master¿s certificate programs, or, in the case of nurse midwives, in certificate programs in existence on the date that is one day prior to November 13, 1998, to serve as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, nurse educators, nurse administrators, or public health nurses, or in other nurse specialties determined by the Secretary to require advanced education (Sec.

811(b) of the PHS Act, 42 U.S.C.

§ 296j(b)).

Eligible applicants are schools of nursing, nursing centers, academic health centers, State or local governments, non-profit health care facilities and other public or private nonprofit entities determined to be appropriate by the Secretary.    In addition to the 50 States, only the District of Columbia, Guam, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the U. S. Virgin Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau are eligible to apply under this funding opportunity announcement.  Federally recognized Indian Tribal Government and Native American Organizations may apply if they are otherwise eligible.
