Nomination for Morro Rock as a Traditional Cultural Place to the National Register of Historic Places

In this agreement, BOEM (Camarillo Office) and the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians (SYBCI) will nominate Morro Rock as a Traditional Cultural Place (TCP) to the National Register of Historic Places.

Morro Rock (Chumash:
Lisamuˈ, Salinan:
Leˈsamo) is located within San Luis Obispo

County, California, and is a sacred place for several Native American Tribes with ancestral lands that include Morro Bay.

This nomination will elevate Morro Rock’s status as a California landmark to the National Register and strengthen protection for it during future wind energy development offshore the central California coast.

This cooperative agreement will provide financial support to the SYBCI to research and document Morro Rock and the surrounding areas for inclusion in the National Register.

The SYBCI cultural resource staff will conduct the activities and involve other Chumash and Salinan Tribes in the nomination process.

This agreement also will serve as a first step for the BOEM Pacific Regional Office to strengthen relations with Tribal Nations through effective partnerships.
