Attwater's Prairie Chicken Captive Breeding

The Attwater's prairie chicken (APC) is a critically endangered grouse found in the coastal prairies of Texas.

Currently, just over 100 birds exist at three locations.

Efforts to propagate and release APCs into the wild have been ongoing since 199 2. In an effort to attain the

credit:


goals established in the APC Recovery Plan, the Abilene Zoo will continue to breed APCs in captivity to increase numbers in the wild.
