Youth Crew to Maintain Trails at Shenandoah National Park

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS NOT A REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS.

This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service’s intention to award financial assistance for the following project activities.

Cooperative Agreement Number Pl5AC00024 was entered into by and between the

Department of the Interior, National Park Service, (NPS), and Conservation Legacy for the purpose of completing important conservation projects, providing young adults with structured, safe, and challenging work and educational opportunities through employment projects that promote personal growth, the development of life skills, and an ethic of natural resource stewardship.

This project will provide an opportunity for a crew of 5 youth to complete trail maintenance and repair using only hand tools.

The work will be in areas throughout the Shenandoah National Park trails network that include Wilderness and non-Wilderness areas located on equestrian and hiking trails.

While the crew will work alongside NPS trails personnel at least 4 days throughout the project, and the NPS will direct and adjust the work plan, the majority of the work will be completed independently by the crew.

Work on trails within Shenandoah National Park will include repair of rock and log erosion control structures within each trail corridor.

These structures include check dams, steps, lateral drains, and water bars.

Work will also include vegetation maintenance and downed tree removal with hand tools.

Work will be tasked out throughout the entire Park.
