Experiential Nearshore Learning - GRPO

The project goal is to develop curriculum sufficient to guide parent/child mentorship in an experiential learning setting.

The primary objective is to seek input and ownership of the curriculum first, by conducting outreach to local schools.

The end result of the project will be parent/child

groups utilizing the curriculum on the water, in the nearshore environment.

The project engages recipients, partners, communities, and/or visitors in shared environmental stewardship.

The project motivates its youth participants to become involved in the natural, cultural and /or historical resource protection of their communities and beyond.

Students gain “real world” or hands-on experience outside of the classroom of natural, cultural and/or historical resource projects.

The project assists in the creation, promotion, facilitation, and/or improvement of the public’s understanding of natural, cultural, historic, recreational and other aspects of areas such as ecological conservation areas, and state and local parks.

This agreement with MN Sea Grant is to develop curriculum for experiential place based learning in the nearshore areas between Grand Portage National Monument and Isle Royale National Park.

This curriculum development will take place in partnership with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and other area stakeholders.

By starting with a rigorous outreach process in local schools, educators, students and parents will be integral to a curriculum development that will ultimately serve parents and their children.
