Ecology of Muskrats in Voyageurs National Park

This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service’s intention to award financial assistance for the following project activities as a single source to Kansas State University who is a member of the Cooperative


Ecosystem Studies Unit and previously competed.

The primary goal of this project component is to evaluate the effectiveness of muskrats as bio-restoration tool for hybrid cattail invaded wetlands.

Tasks to be accomplished include 1) conduct trapping, tagging, translocation, and relocation of radio-marked muskrats in selected study areas; 2) conduct feeding trials to determine food preferences of muskrats for native and non-native plants; 3) produce scientific reports summarizing results for park with better information for management decisions.

All work will take place in Voyageurs National Park and surrounding lands with NPS biologist as the co-principal investigator and will be engaged in study design, data collection, analysis and report writing.
