California Condor Recovery Activities at Grand Canyon National Park
This funding Announcement is not a request for applications.
This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service (NPS), intention to fund the following project activities without competition.
OVERVIEW The priciple objective of the Agreement is to support southwest California condor recovery efforts.
The public benefit of this work includes support of endangered species recovery, a goal established for the public and implemented by the US Fish and Wildlife Service under the authority of the Endangered Species Act.
The public will have an opportunity to learn about the role of The Peregrine Fund (TPF)in the recovery of the California condor and the NPS mission to conserve and protect this endangered bird for future generations.
Work is scheduled to occur in 2012 and may extend through 201 6. The intent of this Agreement is to outline the partnership effort between TPF and the Park to work together towards the recovery of the condor in the southwest region.
RECIPIENT INVOLVEMENT The Peregrine Fund will be involved as the coordinator for the southwest California condor recovery program, based out of Marble Canyon, AZ.
Responsibilities include:
1) Provide support for the South Rim area to monitor condor nests, respond to field needs, and coordinate the Grand Canyon (GRCA) Nest Watch volunteer program.
2) Provide budget staff to work directly with NPS key official to provide quarterly detailed budget and expenditure reports.
3. ) Submit to the GRCA Wildlife Branch an excel or other acceptable database quarterly which will include signal check data, hazing data, and GPS location data for condor use at Grand Canyon.
Timely, uncorrected data will be available to Park biologists upon request to assist with South Rim monitoring.
4) Submit notice (via text message) of frequency changes within 72 hours after change has been made.
5) Provide a location in NAD83HARN UTMs to the GRCA Wildlife Program within 72 hours if it is determined that a breeding pair of condors has selected a nesting cave or other nesting substrate within the Park.
Periodic upsdates will be provided on nesting activity.
6) Submit an annual report of condor activity within Grand Canyon National Park for the reporting period ending December 3 1. The report shall summarize condor activity within Greater Grand Canyon National Park Area including the following items:
a)Hazing events b)Breeding activity c) Nesting sites d) Raw GPS location data e) Detail monitoring methods and activities f) Analysis and conclusion on state of condors in Grand Canyon National Park.
NATIONAL PARK SERVICE INVOLVEMENT Substantial involvement on the part of the National Park Service is anticipated for the successful completion of the objectives to be funded by this award.
In particular, the National Park Service will be responsible for the following:
1) Provide staff members from the divisions of Science & Resource Management and Interpretation to participate as team members.
2) Coordinate subject matter expertise.
3) Facilitate sharing of data.
4) Participate in relevant meetings and workshops focused on condor recovery.
5) Provide staffing for the South Rim area to monitor condor nests, respond to field needs, and coordinate the GRCA Nest Watch volunteer program.
