To: (1) increase the intellectual capacity and proficiency of future scientists and engineers in disciplines critical to defense; and (2) to increase the number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) qualified individuals in the DoD workforce.

The Department of Defense provides the military forces needed to deter war and protect the security of the United States through five major areas: peacekeeping and war-fighting efforts, Homeland Security, evacuation and humanitarian causes.

Program Accomplishments

Fiscal Year 2009: Made 260 new STEM undergraduate and graduate scholarship-for-service awards. Transitioned approximately 75 SMART participants to the DoD workforce. Fiscal Year 2010: Estimate 225-250 new awards to be made. Transition approximately 150 new SMART participants to the DoD workforce. Fiscal Year 2011: Estimate 250-275 new awards to be made. Transition approximately 175 additional SMART participants to DoD workforce.

Uses and Use Restrictions

Awards are made to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in a DoD-relevant STEM field, who must be U. S. citizens and enrolled in an accredited U. S. institution of higher learning, e.g., university, college, etc.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicant Eligibility

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and U.S.

citizens.

Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in a DoD-relevant STEM field.

Applicants participate in internships at DoD laboratories.

Participants will be required to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance.

Upon completion of their degree, applicants are expected to work full-time for the DoD.

Beneficiaries are undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a DoD-relevant STEM field.
