The Department of Education ensures equal access to education and promotes educational excellence through coordination, management and accountability in Federal education programs. The Department works to supplement and complement educational efforts on all levels, encouraging increased involvement by the public, parents and students.
Fiscal Year 2008: The Department made 17 new awards and 56 continuation awards. Fiscal Year 2009: The Department expects to make approximately 19 new awards and 51 continuation awards. Fiscal Year 2010: The Department expects to make approximately 14 new awards and 50 continuation awards.

Under the absolute priorities for this program, grants support early childhood and kindergarten projects, high school projects that aim to aid students in the transition from secondary to postsecondary education, and professional development projects that increase the number and skills of qualified Indian teachers and principals who serve Indian people.

Each eligible entity receiving a grant under this program annual shall submit to the Secretary a report of its operations and activities.
Each annual report shall include: (1) An executive summary; (2) a project status; (3) budget information; and (4) supplemental information.

Audits
In accordance with the provisions of OMB Circular No. A-133 (Revised, June 27, 2003), "Audits of States, Local Governments, and Non-Profit Organizations," nonfederal entities that expend financial assistance of $500,000 or more in Federal awards will have a single or a program-specific audit conducted for that year. Nonfederal entities that expend less than $500,000 a year in Federal awards are exempt from Federal audit requirements for that year, except as noted in Circular No. A-133. Audits may be conducted by the Department"s Office of Inspector General and by site visits of staff. Audits are periodic with no set schedule.

Getting Out and Staying Out, co-founded by Tony Smith of the VSA Consulting Group, works to reduce recidivism rate among men at Rikers Island, New York City. The recidivism rate significantly dropped from 60-plus percent to under 20 percent, with more than a thousand men over a span of eight years.
