AIDS Education and Training Centers have been funded to provide national coverage of education and training for health care providers who care for HIV infected patients.
The grant recipients have been universities and institutions of higher education and are primarily located in areas with a high incidence of HIV/AIDS and within medically underserved areas.
The Department of Health and Human Services is the Federal government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially to those who are least able to help themselves.
15 noncompetitive awards were made in FY 07. AETCs are providing AIDS education and training to approximately 120,000 health care providers each year. For FY 07 and FY 08, the emphasis of the AETCs is to provide hands on clinical training in the medical care of HIV infected patients and training on the use of highly active antiretrovial therapy. In FY 08, it is anticipated that 15 noncompetitive awards will be made.
