NUCLEAR PHYSICS – REACHING A NEW ENERGY SCIENCES WORKFORCE (NP-RENEW)
Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) aims to build foundations for Office of Science (SC) research and training at institutions historically underrepresented in the SC research portfolio.
RENEW leverages SC’s unique national laboratories, user facilities, and other research infrastructures to provide undergraduate and graduate training opportunities for students and academic institutions not currently well represented in the U. S. science and technology ecosystem.
The hands-on experiences gained through RENEW will open new career avenues for participants, forming a nucleus for a future pool of talented young scientists, engineers, and technicians with the critical skills and expertise needed for the full breadth of SC research activities.
PIs, key personnel, and students and postdocs of RENEW awards will be invited to participate in NP researcher meetings and/or SC-wide professional development and collaborator events.The NP program hereby announces its interest in receiving applications for the RENEW initiative.
In FY 2021, NP initiated a Traineeship program aimed at reducing barriers to broader workforce diversity, with emphasis on proposals that leveraged potential workforce at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
This FOA will continue to include traineeships, which come with financial support and stipends for the trainees.
Previous traineeships have offered networking opportunities and mentoring support to foster a strong sense of science identity among participants and expand awareness of career opportunities.

Additional Information of Eligibility:
Domestic applicants except nonprofit organizations described in section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 that engaged in lobbying activities after December 31, 1995, that are classified as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and NOT listed as a R1 Research Institution will be eligible for this FOA.
This FOA uses the Department of Education 2021 eligibility determination of an institution’s MSI status (https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/idues/2022eligibilitymatrix.xlsx) and the R1 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education (https://carnegieclassifications.acenet.edu/lookup/srp.php?clq=%7B%22basic2005_ids%22%3A %2215%22%7D).
Any institution that either receives funding through a Department of Education MSI funding program (coded 6 on the matrix) or that is eligible to receive such funding (coded 5 on the matrix) will be considered an MSI for this FOA.
As a result, and in accordance with 2 CFR 910.126, competition and eligibility for award are restricted to applicants that are classified as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and not listed as a R1 Research Institution.
The goal of the BER-RENEW program is to increase participation of underrepresented groups in BER’s research portfolio.
SC-BER is fully committed to advancing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive research community which is key to providing the scientific and technical expertise for U. S. scientific leadership.
This program is intended to leverage BER’s research at the national laboratories, user facilities, and Bioenergy Research Centers to provide training and research opportunities for students and faculty from non-R1 MSIs and HBCUs, currently underrepresented in the BER portfolio.
Institutions with the R1 Carnegie Classification are excluded from applying.
